I stayed at Kayla’a with my girlfriend in April 2011. We were initially planning to stay only four nights, but we liked it so much that we added an extra night. We wished we could have stayed longer. The resort is one of those places where time seems to stand still. We would usually wake up early and relax in the hammock to watch the sunrise as the local fishermen went out in their canoes to pull up their nets. Eventually, the staff would wander down to the beach and bring us coffee and breakfast.

During the day, we liked to rent the motorbike and around the island, usually ending up somewhere in Panglau for lunch. Alona Beach in Panglau is the main tourist beach where you can get a boat for diving, snorkling, or island hopping tours. There are also a lot of beachfront restaurants. If you like crowds and an active nightlife, you might prefer to stay at Alona Beach, but we were looking for a romantic getaway, not noise and nightclubs, so Kayla’a was perfect for us. You can also arrange a van from Kayla’a to see all the sights like the chocolate hills, tarsiers, suspension bridge, river tours, butterfly garden, etc.

We stayed in the bamboo(Kawayan)  room, which is one of the second story rooms with high ceilings and a huge deck with a view of the ocean and the pool. The bed was extremely comfortable, and we spent many hours reading out on the deck. The air conditioning worked well, though there is such a nice breeze from the ocean that we didn’t really need it that much. The bathroom and a nice large walk-in shower with hot water, a stone surround, and the usual amenities.

The staff at the resort was extremely friendly, and we got to know everyone by name by the time we left. The owner, John, always came to hang out around dinner time and made some great menu recommendations. The food was excellent. I highly recommend the blackened cajun tanigue and grilled squid. They also have excellent burgers.

The only inconvenience was that internet connectivity was pretty useless. I was able to check my email a few times by borrowing one of the prepaid USB dial up modems available to guests, but you should basically be prepared to disconnect while you’re there. It’s healthy to disconnect now and then anyway, so I didn’t mind that much.

Overall, this was my favorite trip to the Philippines, and my best hotel/resort experience. I will definitely stay at Kayla’a the next time I’m in Bohol.

Room Tip: The bamboo rooms are the bigger better rooms.

I stayed in a Rattan room for 2 nights. The room itself is quite basic, more like a cabin but quite comfortable. The staff and owner, Jon, were fantastic and extremely helpful. They attended to all of our requirements and organised transfers and tours for us.

The hotel is in an isolated location right on the beach. It is exceptionally serene and is the most relaxing place I’ve been to. The hotel has a small pool in the middle of the complex. Because there are only a handful of rooms, it was quite cosy and we felt like we had the hotel to ourselves for the most part. Breakfast and dinner was delicious!

Pros: Service and location.Con: internet access is limited.

…if you want to escape the crowd and dont fancy any disco at 2am near your bed than this is your kind of place. Relaxing, family atmosphere, very clean. All the staff is very nice and helpfull…met owners wife as well and I would describe her as lovely lady who I cant imagine to be rude (actualy none of the people I met there)….even the standart rooms are well equipped, cleaned every day….food was very nice too ….so I realy dont have much to reprehend, maybe just the beach which is right next to the resort was not the best for swimming when we were there but we were told that it was due some currents etc and normaly is nice too..better than any other compliments I can say that originaly we booked 4 days via agoda and at the end we extended it for the entire stay on bohol…
